Welcome to Mid-Rivers Cancer Center. In this section, you'll learn how to schedule a new patient appointment and what to expect on your first visit to Mid-Rivers Cancer Center in Montross, Virginia. You can also find directions to the Center. 

You are considered a new patient if you have never been to Mid-Rivers Cancer Center.

Your first steps in battling cancer is your best chance at winning the fight. At Mid-Rivers Cancer Center, our highly-trained doctor, professional staff and team of on-site physicists work in collaboration with internationally-recognized scientists to stay at the forefront of cancer treatment and research.  Mid-Rivers Cancer Center Radiation Oncologist, Christopher S. Walsh, M.D., designed this cancer center with you and your care central in his mind.

When you come to the Mid-Rivers Cancer Center, we encourage you to bring along a family member or friend to accompany you to your appointment. Your companion can help you travel to the Center, share in listening and asking questions during your consultation, and provide you with the support you may need while trying to make decisions about your health care.

Additionally, you may find it helpful for you bring along the following items during your visit to Mid-Rivers Cancer Center:
+Your appointment information and materials sent to you in your orientation packet
+Health insurance information including your insurance card(s), special forms, referrals or important phone numbers
+Contact information of where you will be staying in the Northern Neck, if you're traveling from out-of-town
+Any additional medical records not already sent in advance of your visit 
+A list of all your physicians names, addresses and their telephone numbers 
+A list of any medications that you are currently taking along with the prescribed dosages 
+A pen and notebook and/or folder for keeping a list of questions that you may want to ask the physician, taking notes, and for storing any new paperwork or educational materials collected during your visit 
+Books, magazines, crossword puzzles, sewing, or other items that may help you pass the time

When you first arrive you will be greeted by friendly staff who will help assure that all paper work is 
completed easily and accurately.  Dr. Walsh will then meet with you to go over your medical history 
and treatment options.

	"The Sharper Beam" of the Megavoltage Linear Accelerator using solid brass compensator filtration  units created for each patient means higher resolution of the treatment beam, more accurate delivery  of modulated radiation therapy, and

	Utilization of IMRT, or Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy:

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a powerful cancer-fighting technology. 

Oncologists consider IMRT to be ideal for prostate cancer as well as benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, and other organs that lie near important body parts such as the eyes, optic nerves, brain, brain stem, salivary glands, bladder, rectum, small bowel, kidneys, liver, lung and spinal cord.
