Dr. Walsh
earned his medical degree from State University of New York, Buffalo and was
awarded internships in Surgery and Medicine. He specialized in Radiation
Oncology and served as Chief Resident of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts
General Hospital. He then assisted in the opening of the Northern Virginia
Cancer Center in Alexandria, Virginia. He served as the Medical Director
of the Cancer Center of Virginia, Fredericksburg, Virginia for twelve years
prior to joining the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical
College of Virginia as a Clinical Assistant Professor. He treats all types
of cancer, including breast, prostate, lung, colon, skin, sarcoma, lymphoma and
head and neck cancers. Dr. Walsh is also trained in Gammaknife™ and
brachytherapy (implant) techniques.
During the course of his
career, Dr. Walsh has received recognition, awards and patents for his work in
patient safety in the radiation therapy process. This includes a program,
"Safe Practices in Radiation Oncology: A Guide to Process Support"
which was approved for continuing education credit by the American Society of
Radiologic Technologists and the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
Dr. Walsh is very pleased to
bring this personally designed facility to the Northern Neck of Virginia.
In addition to being a leader in safety, Dr. Walsh has been an innovator in
implementing Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) at the community
level. His process for managing solid brass compensator filtration of
radiation beams is noted for higher resolution and more accurate beam delivery,
while reducing "hot spots" and non-essential radiation exposure to
patients.
